Community Service
SBSI’s original mission from 1827 promises to support
our employees, customers and the communities in which we
live and work. That philosophy is embodied today by our
Community Investment Program and our Charitable Foundation,
founded in 1998. SBSI donated over $420,000 in 2006 benefiting
more than 320 different non-profit organizations including schools, youth groups,
sports teams, the arts, the elderly, and social service
groups in Southern Maine.
School Savings
SBSI began a School Savings Program back in 1922 to encourage
young people to save on a regular basis. Each week throughout
the school year, a bank employee visits participating elementary
schools to collect children’s savings envelopes and
brings them back to the bank for deposit. It’s a
great way to teach the children the importance of saving
for a rainy day.
As of January 2007, the number of school savings accounts was 687 with
over $150,000 in total deposits and the average account had $218. It’s
a big part of what we're here for, says Bank President
Kevin Savage "We appreciate the value of smaller accounts.”
Tours for area students are still a regular occurrence,
and the children marvel over the intricate vault door,
the pneumatic tube that carries transactions from cars
to the driveup teller, and holding a bundle of $10,000
in cash. For more information on school tours, call Marc
Gagnon or Don Lauzier at 284-4591.
